Steel Shearing and waste minimizing

Steel Shearing Process in Surgical Instruments

ment Manufacturing

Steel shearing is one of the first and most important steps in the surgical instrument manufacturing process. Steel cutting according to order involves cutting large sheets or rods of stainless steel into precise, smaller blanks (raw shapes) that will later be forged, machined, or ground into surgical tools. You need experience drawing readers and mathematics professionals to distribute the steel with less waste and fast production.

Purpose of Shearing in Surgical Instrument Production

  • Prepares raw material (typically 420, 440C, or 316L steel)

  • Ensures consistent size and shape for further processing

  • Reduces material waste and improves machining efficiency

Shearing Process Steps

  1. Material Selection
High-grade stainless steel (usually in rod or sheet form) is chosen depending on th

e instrument type (cutting vs. clamping).

  2. Marking & Measurement
Steel is measured and marked according to specific design dimensions.

  3. Shearing Operation
Using hydraulic shearing machines or power shears, the steel is cleanly cut:

    • Straight cut for sheets

    • Rod cutting dies for cylindrical bars

  4. Quality Inspection
    Sheared blanks are inspected for:

    • Flatness

    • Clean edges

    • Correct length and width

  5. Storage or Direct Transfer
    The sheared pieces are either:

    • Stored for future forging/machining

    • Immediately moved to hot forging, cold forging, Laser Cutting  or CNC processing
